A canceled iron man game

According to the studio’s founder, Disney wanted the game made quickly, and that caused problems.

In 2012, Disney and Marvel contacted Avalanche Studios, the team behind Just Cause, and set out with them on making an Iron Man game without a sequel.

A canceled iron man game

The news of this never-released Iron Man game came from a MinnMax interview with Avalanche Studios co-founder Christofer Sundberg. The studio is mainly known for its popular open-world franchise, Just Cause. Those games tend to be massive, filled with lots of explosions, action, and flying around in jets and other strange vehicles, not to mention protagonist Rico Rodriguez’s ability to perform BASE jumps and other wild, death-defying feats. On paper, a game starring Iron Man does seem like a perfect fit for the studio. But according to Sundberg, who left Avalanche in 2020 to form his own studio, there were problems with how fast Disney wanted the game made.

Sundberg told MinnMax's Ben Hanson that if they hired all the necessary people to finish the game in the short time Disney wanted, it would "completely disrupt the studio." “We would have had to hire 70-80 people to the team I was responsible for coming up with a new project,” Sundberg said.

According to Sundberg, quitting working on it was "a difficult thing", and he was disappointed that the nearly two years of hard work the team had put into the project "went to the bathroom" after the game was canned.

During the interview, Sundberg didn't share too many details on what kind of game it would be, though he did mention that it focuses on close combat similar to the popular Batman Arkham games. He also confirmed that the game will allow the player to fly "anywhere" like Iron Man in the movies. He also told Hanson that he still wishes to see the game be finished by his old team someday in the future.

“So many great people involved on both sides of the game,” he said. “It would’ve been great.”

While it's not gratifying that this game never surfaced, we're not hopeless for Marvel-themed video games in 2022. More rumored games like Wolverine, Spider-Man and Midnight Suns, and Black Panther from EA. Still, an Iron Man game like Just Cause can be fun.
